SADLY, TRUVY DIED ON JULY 9TH, 2007 AT 4 YEARS OF AGE.
Named after a character
from the movie "Steel
Magnolias", this is Truvy.
I rescued her and 5
others from an actual chicken
farm. All were runts. When thousands of
chickens are being raised, runts can get overlooked easily. My good
friend who owns the
farm helped me gather up the little critters. What a sight seeing two
grown women racing around thousands of chickens trying to corner these
guys! Two of them were just too far gone and died within a day. The
other four, a rooster and 3 hens, made it to adulthood. Unfortunately
though, Truvy was the last survivor.
Not having knowledge about commercial type chickens, I was quite surprised how heavy these birds can get. They are bred to grow fast, and find their way to the dinner table or egg producing market (which would have been Truvy's destiny). She weighed about 10 pounds and spent most of her time sitting around, as her little legs just weren't strong enough to carry her weight for long.
Truvy shared the
farm with 7 Rhode Island Reds
and 4 Jersey Giants,
which she tolerated but preferred to ignore.
I got a
goofy smile on my face whenever she wobbled her way over to me at
feeding
time.
I will miss her.
